Peter Stoffer was first elected as Member of Parliament for the riding of Sackville—Eastern Shore, Nova Scotia in 1997. He represented the riding until his defeat in the 2015 election.
During his 18 years on Parliament Hill Peter served as the NDP critic in numerous portfolios including Fisheries and Oceans, National Defense, Amateur Sport and Canada Post. Most notably, Peter served as the Official Opposition Critic for Veterans Affairs after his party became the official opposition after the 2011 election.
Peter won numerous awards and accolades during his time on Parliament Hill. These include Parliamentarian of the Year in 2013, Veteran’s Ombudsman Award in 2008 and Best Constituency MP in 2007.
As well, Peter received the Dutch honour of Knight in the Order of Orange-Nassau in 2015 and the Canadian honour of Knight in the Order of St. George in 2014.
Perhaps Peter’s greatest honour has been to be named as the Most Collegial MP seven times. He has always been recognized for his collaborative approach in addressing the issues facing those he represented. He worked well with all parties to achieve results.
Prior to his election as a Member of Parliament, Peter worked in the airline industry for 18 years. He was born in the Netherlands and has lived in British Columbia and the Yukon. He currently resides in Nova Scotia.
Peter will continue to use his professional and political experience to assist individuals from diverse political, ethnic and business backgrounds to tackle challenging issues in a cooperative manner.
