French-language debate review
During the French-language debate, Mark Carney was the main target of the other leaders, criticized for his lack of political experience and the Liberal Party’s record. He pledged not to create any new health programs, to double the pace of housing construction, and to protect drinking water reserves, natural resources, and the French language.
None of the leaders presented a financial framework, which moderator Patrice Roy strongly criticized. Pierre Poilievre promised to cut government consultants, reduce costs through attrition, and implement a law requiring one dollar in savings for every dollar spent. Jagmeet Singh called for higher taxes on large corporations and the closure of tax loopholes. All leaders agreed that the immigration system is under strain; Carney wants to maintain current intake levels, while Poilievre called the system out of control.
On energy, both Carney and Poilievre support nuclear development and favor expanding oil production and pipelines, with Poilievre pledging to repeal Bill 69. Singh secured a promise from Carney to end fossil fuel subsidies.
Yves-François Blanchet, leader of the Bloc Québécois, stood out with a strong defense of the Québécois nation and effectively challenged the other leaders.
The debate also featured tense moments on the issue of Gaza, Singh had his microphone cut for insisting on discussing healthcare.
