Federal Major Projects Office Announces First Proposals Under Review
This past week, the new Major Projects Office (MPO) announced the first five projects it will be reviewing. If the Office determines that they are in the national interest, they will then be fast tracked through any approval processes necessary.
These projects are as follows:
- LNG Canada Phase 2 (Kitimat, BC) – Liquefied natural gas production facility, the completion of which would double Canada’s production of the commodity.
- Darlington New Nuclear Project (Bowmanville, ON) – A Small Nuclear Reactor (SMR) which would make Canada the first G7 nation to operate such a reactor.
- Contrecœur Terminal Container Project (Contrecœur, QC) – An Expansion to the Port of Montréal increasing capacity by approximately 60%.
- McIlvenna Bay Foran Copper Mine Project (SK) – A Copper and Zinc mine selected to compliment existing refining supply chains already in existence in Canada. The mine will also be the first net-zero copper mine in Canada.
- Red Chris Mine Expansion (BC) – A lifespan extension on an existing copper mine. The expansion will increase Canada’s copper output by an estimated 15%.
Remarks
The Prime Minister also stated that the office will be helping to develop a “Canadian Sovereign Cloud”. That was not mentioned in the initial batch of projects the MPO will be evaluating, but if it was mentioned by the Prime Minister it is likely coming at a later date.
