Ontario Liberal Party 2022 Election Platform Highlights

The Ontario Liberal Party’s fully costed election platform has been released. CHG’s William Norman has highlighted the campaign promises, broken down my geographical location.

Brampton

  • We’ll also increase admission in nursing programs by a minimum of 10% each year – which will add 2,000 additional nurses – and create over 450 new medical school and residency spaces across the province, using new learning avenues to do so including in Brampton and Scarborough
  • Turning Brampton’s Peel Memorial into a full hospital and delivering a third new hospital and cancer centre in Brampton
  • We’ll save the endangered Barrie-Collingwood Railway and Orangeville-Brampton Railway.
  • The Hurontario LRT extension further north along Main Street to Brampton GO
  • The expansion of Brampton bus rapid transit, including along Queen Street and extending the Highway 7 Rapidway to the west
  • We’ll stop Highway 413, the Ford Conservatives’ project that would only shave an average of 30 seconds off of commutes while paving over important wetlands and farmland. Instead, we’ll focus on investing in transit and building more walkable, livable communities, including Brampton’s urban boulevard alternative

Scarborough

Northern Ontario

  • We’ll support schools as community hubs, reverse budget cuts to afterhours community programs in schools and encourage schools and community services to share buildings so students and their families can easily access services, especially in rural and Northern Ontario
  • We’ll also eliminate set-up connection fees for rooftop solar charging panels and bidirectional electric vehicle charging, and support projects with Indigenous and Northern communities that reduce reliance on diesel and drive electrification in the remote north – including by supporting completion of the Wataynikaneyap Transmission Project.
  • We’ll unlock Northern Ontario’s reserves of sustainable battery metals and minerals to ensure that Northern Ontario communities, including Indigenous peoples, are the long-term benefactors of this industry while protecting the ecological and cultural values of the region.
  • To encourage safer winter driving, we’ll introduce a refundable tax credit of $75 per winter tire and $100 per studded tire in Northern Ontario.
  • we’ll increase the admission cap on the Northern Ontario School of Medicine, providing more tuition subsidies for students committed to staying in the North long-term. We’ll also work to bring a midwifery program back to the North. When taken together, these measures will reduce wait times for and quality of care in the North.
  • We’ll annually review the Northern Health Travel Grant to ensure it keeps up with rising costs – and we’ll lift the arbitrary cap on new Consumption and Treatment Services sites, which includes safe injection programs, expediting applications in rural and Northern Ontario.
  • We’ll also ensure the Ring of Fire is developed in a sustainable, inclusive and environmentally conscious way – fully funding road access, facilitating the connection of First Nations communities to the provincial power grid and entering into revenue sharing agreements with Indigenous communities. We’ll also support and empower Northern municipalities by rebating 5% of the provincial mining tax
  • we’ll commit to moving multiple government offices to Northern Ontario, extend the waiver of crown resource fees for resource-based tourism businesses through 2022 and work with federal partners to ensure settlement of more skilled newcomers in Northern Ontario.
  • Ensure the highest level of winter maintenance standards to protect travellers on Northern highways by designating Highways 11 and 17 as class 1 highways so they’re maintained and plowed more often

Sudbury

  • We’ll also ensure the sustainability of postsecondary learning and training opportunities in Northern Ontario, including support for Laurentian University and establishing Université de Sudbury as an independent francophone university with an arrangement to make it easy for students to transfer credits between the two.

Kawartha

  • We’ll also designate 30% of our land as protected areas by 2030 – up from 10% – and expand the size and number of provincial parks, including expanding Kawartha Highlands Provincial Park.

Moose Cree First Nation

  • We’ll work closely with municipalities and Indigenous communities to protect and restore Ontario’s rivers, lakes, wetlands and watersheds – including Moose Cree First Nation and Kitchenuhmaykoosib Inninuwug.

  • We also don’t believe people transferring from one transit service to another should be punished with higher costs, so for the longterm we’ll work to integrate fares between transit services within the Greater Toronto and Hamilton Area, ensuring everyone pays less than they do today

  • We’ll save the endangered Barrie-Collingwood Railway and Orangeville-Brampton Railway.
