By-Election Overview
By-elections we held in the ridings of University—Rosedale, Scarborough Southwest, and Terrebonne. The Liberals held the Liberal strongholds of University—Rosedale and Scarborough Southwest and won the hotly contested riding of Terrebonne.
Terrebonne was the most closely watched contest. During the 2025 general election, Terrebonne was won by a single vote and this result was overturned by the Supreme Court of Canada- triggering the by‑election. Last night’s result was much more decisive with Liberal candidate Tatiana Auguste defeating Bloc Québécois candidate Nathalie Sinclair‑Desgagné by about 730 votes.
With these victories, and the recent spate of floor crossers, the Liberals increased their seat count to 174 seats, surpassing the 172‑seat threshold for a majority in the House of Commons. This makes Mark Carney the first Canadian prime minister to win a majority through floor crossing and is the first time a Parliament has transitioned from a minority to a majority government between general elections. Consequently, it is not known exactly how this transition will occur and what parts of the Parliament will be impacted.
A Liberal majority will allow the government to pass legislation without opposition support, decreasing the amount of negotiating the government must do with Opposition parties. It could also give the Liberals more power over House of Commons committees.
