A few moments ago, Prince Edward Island Premier Dennis King announced that he will be resigning as Premier of PEI, Leader of the PEI PC Party, and MLA, effective tomorrow.

During this afternoon’s press conference announcing his departure, King noted that the executive of the party will convene to discuss caucus recommendations on who will serve as interim leader and the 34th Premier of Prince Edward Island. A reminder, leaders are interim but there are no interim premiers, rather full premiers.

He signaled this move is not a way to enter federal politics, and that he has no plans to run in the upcoming federal election. Premier King came to government in 2019 in a minority, which turned into a majority as a result of a by-election win. In the spring of 2023, King and the PCs won a decisive majority.
