Throne Speech Overview
Saskatchewan’s fall legislative session opened this week with Lieutenant Governor Bernadette McIntyre delivering the Speech from the Throne, centered on the theme “Strong, Safe, Secure.” The address acknowledged global challenges such as rising trade tensions and tariffs but highlighted Saskatchewan’s resilience, strong economy, and the government’s commitment to safety, affordability, and future growth.
The government pledged to protect provincial control over energy policy and oppose federal clean electricity regulations. Through the new Saskatchewan First Energy Security Strategy and Supply Plan, it will extend the life of coal-fired power plants and advance nuclear development to ensure affordable, reliable electricity. The speech also highlighted commitments to key priorities such as healthcare expansion, agriculture, education, and technology resilience.
Technological security was a major focus. Saskatchewan will strengthen its defences against cyber threats through a Cybersecurity Collaboration Agreement with the federal government and other provinces. The partnership aims to protect provincial data and infrastructure amid the rise of artificial intelligence (AI) and growing cybersecurity risks. In agriculture, the government announced enhancements to risk management programs, including changes to AgriStability, raising compensation rates to 90% and doubling the payment cap to $6 million.
